With its archaeological remains of homes, cultivated areas and ramparts, the palm grove bears witness to a multi-millennial occupation that was both dense and rich. In 2019, on behalf of the RCU, AFALULA launched an interdisciplinary project bringing together archaeologists from Archaïos (an archaeological science research society) and experts from the CNRS, the National Museum of Natural History and CEREGE. The project focuses on geoarchaeology, archaeobotany, anthropology, hydrology and soil studies. As essential elements, the program includes the mapping of the palm grove over several dozen hectares, studies of the evolution of the human footprint, together with vegetation and ancestral agricultural and hydraulic practices.
