Covering 15 hectares, al Deira, now called the Old Town, was occupied until the early 1980s and symbolizes a key stage in the history of the oasis. Since 2019, AFALULA has supplied its expertise in the field of conservation with CRAterre (International Center for Earth Construction), supporting the RCU in the rediscovery of ancestral construction techniques. At the same time, an archaeological and historical research program called MUDUD (Multiscalar Documentation for Urban Dynamics), led by researchers from Archaïos, is exploring the origins and changes of this emblematic urban site over the centuries.
